Oil-Film Interferometric Skin-Friction Measurement Technique in Hypersonic Wind Tunnel

Reporter: Zhang C.

The measurement of skin friction is important for aerodynamic design, turbulence models validation, and flow control application. The oil-film interferometric techniques are outstanding in various techniques because of their relative low-cost, ease of use and accuracy. But oil-film interferometric techniques face a problem applied to hypersonic wind tunnel that the temperature of oil film must be measured simultaneously for viscosity calculation. An instrument integrating interferometry with infrared camera and the automated analysis software for fringe and infrared images identification were developed. The test results of flat plate show the instrument can accurately measure surface shear over relatively large area in a single test conducted in φ0.5m hypersonic wind tunnel at Mach number 8.
