Regional features of environmental adaptation of Belarusian peasants-migrants of Siberia and the Far East (end of 19 - first half of 20 centuries)

ABSTRACT: Based on the field and written sources, the regional features of environmental adaptation of Belarusian peasants-migrants of Siberia and the Far East have been studied. In the Asian part of Russia Belarusian peasants preferred to settle in the agricultural zone which was located in mixed forests or taiga. Due to more severe natural and climatic conditions, in some regions of Siberia and the Far East Belarusian migrants could not reproduce all the elements of agriculture that had developed in their homeland. In this situation, more rational borrowing from Russian old settlers played an important role in adapting to the new conditions. In all the regions we have surveyed, the role of hunting, fishing and gathering has significantly increased in the ecological adaptation of Belarusian peasant-migrants.
