Livestock and hunting in the economy of the russian population of Tara areal in the Irtysh region: a comparative study of the city and village

Reporter: Bondarev A.

A comparative study of the collections of animal bone remains from the Ananyino-I and Tara fortress excavations in 2014-2018 (total volume of 10314 and 2483 specimens, respectively) characterize the different nature of exploitation of populations of agricultural and wild animals. Ananyino's collection is indicative of diversified livestock breeding with cattle predominance. The subordinate position is occupied by a pig and a sheep, and very rarely a goat. A significant role is played by hunting, first of all, for roe deer, elk and hare, as well as for bear, beaver, badger and wolf. The collection from Tara shows the insignificant role of hunting in the household and the complete dominance of cattle for meat. Judging by the age characteristics of the collection, cows, such as pigs and sheep, were kept in small numbers in Tara, and most of the cattle were delivered from nearby rural settlements. Horse breeding was developed in both areas, but quantification is problematic due to the small role of horses as a source of meat. The bones of domestic mammals, less often elk and roe deer, were used as raw materials for the production of various products. The collections contain the bones of birds and fish, the volume of which in Ananyino is much larger.
