Landscape and structure of settlement of the tributary in the XVI-XVIII centuries: problems of interpretation of sources

This article is devoted to the problem of interpretation of sources which represent the structure of settling in the Tobol river basin throughout XVI-XVIII centuries. As a rule, the first cities were located on the dominant terrain and were military strongholds. However, there is practically no comprehensive research on the initial stages of human-landscape interaction during the development of Siberia by the Russian population. In this regard, the interpretation of sources on this issue is rather important. These sources are subdivided into two groups – cartographic and written. Cartographic sources are largely represented by the works of Remezov and his sons. Later sources may indicate a gradual transformation of economic activity on the example of the landscape – the expansion of the urban territory, the loss of the military-strategic function, the emergence of large economic centres, etc. As for the written sources, they are subdivided into two subgroups – annalistic and ego-documents. Both have unique descriptive evidences of settlement layout through the context of landscape. In addition to these sources, the usage of GIS methods allows to trace the trends in the formation of lines of communication and the development of certain standard solutions for the organization of the urban environment. Moreover, it chronologically expands the study and allows to compare data with other regions, including foreign data.
