Study of the bone collagen isotopic composition and the lifestyle reconstruction of the Middle Don population of the Scythian period

The study is devoted to the reconstruction of the internal structure of the society of nomads of the early Iron Age. Anthropological and paleogenetic studies indicate the heterogeneity of the composition of the Scythian population groups. Is there a heterogeneity in the parameters of the lifestyle of these people? To study this aspect, we used data on the isotopic composition of collagen in the bone tissue of people and herbivores from the burial mounds of the Middle Don. High variability of carbon isotope composition was revealed. Cluster analysis confirms the heterogeneity of food traditions within the studied group. Cultural and environmental factors of the formation of such heterogeneity are discussed.
