The study of traces of Iron Age agriculture in the Moskva River basin

Studies in the Moskva River Valley showed that traces of the agricultural activity of the Iron Age are reflected in peat and soil pollen spectra at a distance of 1-2 km from the hillforts. Deforestation around the Iron Age settlements was very significant. Economic activities and fires contributed to a radical restructuring of the forest, the change of broad-leaved (linden) associations to secondary pine and birch forests. Thanks to the development of diagnostic criteria, it was possible to find traces of slash-and-burn agriculture in a number of points around the fortifications.
