Chronology of the event


First five seminars had the status of the All - Russian scientific seminar, since the sixth till the fourteenth - the status of the International scientific seminar, since the fifteenth it became the International scientific symposium. The first seminar took place within the All-Russian research conference “Regional problems of international relationships in Russia” (21-23 November, 1993, Omsk) The cochairs of the organizing committee were A.I. Kazannik, V.A. Tishkov and N.A. Tomilov. The seminar took place on 23 November, 25 scientists  from 8 cities of Russia took part in its work. The main speaker on ethnoarcheology was V.A. Shnirelman (Moscow).

The second seminar took place on 23 November 1994 within the All – Russian scientific conference “Archeological microdistricts of Western Siberia” the organizing committee chair was V.I. Matyushchenko. For the first time the texts and theses of the seminar’s reports were published.  The III seminar семинар took place on 15–16 November,1995 in Omsk as an independent academic event.  The IV seminar was held in Novosibirsk by Omsk organizers. It took place on 12 - 14 November, 1996. Further, these seminars and symposiums were almost always held in other cities of Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Such procedure aims at discussing academic topics at the intersection of archeology and ethnography (and also at the intersection of these disciplines with others) with researches from different regions and research centers, consolidation of Russian and foreign scientists involved into ethnoarcheological research around the symposium, and also the trial of the results of the research of Omsk archeologists, ethnographers and ethnoarcheologists.

The V seminar was held within the Second congress of ethnographers and anthropologists of Russia (organizing committee chairs – R.G. Kouzeyev and V.A. Tishkov) on 1 - 5 June 1997 in Oufa. The VI International seminar took place on 15 - 17 October in 1998 in St. Petersburg. The VII seminar took place on 8 - 11 June 1999 in Moscow within the  III congress of ethnographers and anthropologists of Russia (organizing committee chairs – М. N. Goubogloh and V.A.Tishkov). The VIII seminar took place on 15 - 18 September 2000 in Vladivostok. The IX seminar took place on  20 - 23 September 2001 in Nalchik within the IV congress of ethnographers and anthropologists of Russia organizing committee chairs – K. М.Doumanov  and  V.A. Tishkov). The X seminar worked on 9 - 14 September 2002 in Khanty-Mansiysk  simultaneously with Northern archeological congress (organizing committee chair – А. V. Fillipenko). The XI seminar took place on 9 - 12 June 2003 in Омске within the V congress of ethnographers and anthropologists of Russia (organizing committee chairs – L. К. Polezhaeyev, V.A.Tishkov and N.A. Tomilov).
The seminar went international in  2004, when the twelfth one was held on 23 - 25 September in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The XIII seminar worked on  20 - 21 October 2005 in Omsk, the XIVth  – 18 - 20 October 2006 in Krasnoyarsk, the XVth,  already a symposium, 21 - 24 May 2007in Odessa, Ukraine, the XVIth – 14 - 16 October  2008 гin Novosibirsk, the XVIIth – 9 - 10 September 2009 in Omsk, the XVIIIth – 6 - 8 October 2010 in Kazan.
The XIX symposium took place on  27 - 30 September 2011 in Omsk  within the International scientific congress “The Ethnic History and Culture of Turkic Peoples of Eurasia” (organizing committee chairs – А. P. Derevyanko, I. А. Prozorova and N.A. Tomilov). The XX symposium took place in May 2013 in Irkutsk.

Jubilee Events


Almost every seminar\symposium was dedicated to some jubilees of VIII – the beginning of XXI centuries scientists, who contributed significantly to the research of ethnographical and ethnoarcheological topics, especially to the research of scientific issues at the intersection of archeology and ethnography. Financial Support


Universities and research institutions who organized the seminars\symposiums encouraged their work. Financial assistance was provided by Russian Fundamental Research Foundation (1996, 1999 - 2002, 2004 - 2006, 2013 ), Russian Humanitarian Scientific Foundation (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001), «Open Society» Institute, Soros Foundation (2001), academic councils of “Integration” Federal Grant Program (1999, 2000), Republican complex research program «Peoples of Russia: regns development» ( 2011 ), Government of the Republic of Tatarstan (2010).

Omsk State University named after F.M. Dostoevsky (Russian Ministry of Education and Science) is permanently involved in organizing the seminar\symposium. For  many years this university hosts the research laboratory of ethnoarcheology at the Department of Archeology and Museum Studies (since November 2013 – the Department of Ethnology, Anthropology, Archeology and Museum Studies), Omsk Branch of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (before 2006 – Omsk Branch of the United Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) which has a intersectional ethnoarcheological group and the Siberian Branch of Russian Institute of Culture Studies of the Russian Ministry of Culture.

Jubilee Symposium

Among organizers of the 20th international scientific symposium on «The Integration of Archaeological and Ethnographic Research» dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of М. А. Каstren and  the 85th anniversary of the birth of R. G. Кouzeyev, there are the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia, Novosibirsk), Irkutsk State Technical University (Russia, Irkutsk), Siberian Military State Academy of Education (Russia, Irkutsk), Irkutsk State University (Russia, Irkutsk), University of Aberdeen (Aberdeen, the UK)
The organizing committee of the symposium was headed by the  academician of the Russian Academy of Science V. I. Molodin, professor D. D. Andersson, N. А. Тоmilov, А. V. Kharinsky, vice chairmen of the committee were associate professors М. А. Коroussenko, Е. А. Lipnina, academic secretaries were associate professors А. V. Теtenkin и S. S. Тikhonov.
By the beginning of the symposium its materials were published in two volumes including 162 papers – texts of reports. At the forum there were 90 speakers from Austria, Belgium, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, the USA, Finland, France and Sweden.
