Venue & How to Get

Crete is the largest island in modern Greece and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located in the southern part of the Aegean Sea separating the Aegean from the Libyan Sea. Here, you can admire the remnants of brilliant civilizations, explore glorious beaches, impressive mountains capes, fertile valleys and steep gorges and become part of the island's rich gastronomic culture. Of all the Greek islands, Crete is one of the most distinctive and beautiful.

Crete is relatively long and narrow, stretching for 160 miles (260 km) on its east-west axis and varying in width from 7.5 to 37 miles (12 to 60 km). The administrative centre is Irákleio (Heraklion; historically Candia), on the north coast. Area of the island is 3,218 square miles (8,336 square km), population is about 630,000.

The Fifth International Conference CATALYSIS FOR RENEWABLE SOURCES: FUEL, ENERGY, CHEMICALS will be held in the city of Agios Nikolaos, 65 km east of Heraklion, the biggest city of Crete. Agios Nikolaos, or just Agios as the locals call it, dominates the beautiful Merabello Bay, on the northeast coast of Lassithi Prefecture in East Crete. Agios Nikolaos has a population of approximately 10,000. Though small, it is the second largest town in Lassithi Prefecture, the easternmost prefecture of Crete. The famous lake of Agios Nikolaos, around which the town centre is built, continues to impress visitors. Agios Nikolaos is set on the largest natural bay in Crete, Mirabello or Merabello Bay, named for the beautiful view (mira bella) of the sea from the town. The history of Agios Nikolaos is marked by its harbour in the Ammoudi area, which is still the commercial port of the town.

CRS-5 will take place in the Conference Centre of the Miramare Hotel. The attractive Miramare Hotel is situated in a peaceful location just above the sea front with a great view of the town of Aghios Nikolaos and the Mirabello Bay. The hotel is built in traditional island style architecture and is situated between two beaches. The lively resort centre is just a short walk away. Miramare Hotel offers a full range of facilities, different types and styles of accommodation.
